Wide Awakening

Laura Whidden: The Story-Telling Songstress

Passionate. Compelling. Life-changing. Laura Whidden's music is more than a powerful soprano voice accompanied by melodic piano and acoustic guitar. It's an experience. Through her music, Laura seeks to restore in humanity the awe of God, which leads to worship, repentance, and relationship.

Among her musical influences she cites contemporary Christian music legends such as Amy Grant, Rich Mullins, and Cindy Morgan. Just as her musical mentors, singing is the transforming ministry that has led Laura around the world.

Her largest live audience to date has been a crowd of 25,000 young people at an international youth event held in Wisconsin. She has performed for audiences via satellite through a broadcast to 60 different countries during a global evangelism campaign. Laura was in the top 20 of 400 entries for the GMA (Gospel Music Association) contemporary song-writers competition in 2001. Laura was recently recognized by a local radio station in their holiday song writing competition in Dec 2003 taking first place and chosen as the WFRN local artist of the month for April 2004.

Laura released her first independent album entitled Awaken Me in August of 1999. Her newest CD Flow, released in July of 2003, has already received wide acclaim. Flow, also independent, features original songs written by Laura and was professionally arranged by some of the best producers in the business.

Her ministry of music transforms compelling lyrics into a moving encounter with Christ. Her concerts feature a time of music and testimony, the stories behind the songs. These stories tell of the ways that God has shaped her life and the amazing lessons that He has taught her through her own experiences and the lives of others. One of the unique moments of Laura's concerts involes writing a song with her audience right there on the spot. The audience chooses chords and helps Laura bring a story or verse from the Bible to life in music.

Laura's life story has given her a passion for a particular ministry for those who suffer from anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders. She is especially interested in helping teenage girls who are struggling with this disease and wants to offer them hope and alternatives in their life. Laura believes that true hope comes from a relationship with Jesus. "There's a little piece of my own story in every song, and the one constant in my life is the all encompassing, accepting love of Christ that makes my life worth living. I hope when people hear my music, it will help them feel the love of God and sense their worth in Him."
